The Last Sunday after the Epiphany
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
This Sunday is Transfiguration Sunday, the last Sunday after the Epiphany. We celebrate Jesus’s Transfiguration on the mountaintop in the presence of Peter, James and John. They saw his face and clothing radiant with light, experienced Moses and Elijah talking with him, and heard a voice from heaven saying, “This is my Beloved Son.” This experience was a mystical foreshadowing of Christ’s Resurrection.
Our Annual Meeting for Saint John’s Episcopal Church Getty Square is this Sunday, February 26th at 11:30 a.m. Please join us to hear reports from 2016, to vote for a Junior Warden and Vestry Class of 2020, and to share a light lunch and good fellowship. Please also feel free to invite those who have not yet returned to see our beautiful restoration and to rejoice in this wonderful community of faith. This is my first Annual Meeting as Priest-in-Charge and I am looking forward to rejoicing with you at what God has done here in 2016 and to help us see what might be possible for 2017.
Based on your recommendations, the Nominating Committee met this past week and came up with a slate of candidates. The nominee for Junior Warden is Deborah DeBride, and the nominees for the Vestry Class of 2020 are Linda Brown, Carol Craft, Arlene Tracy and Tara Seeley. All the nominees are very faithful members who have already contributed much to this community. They will be on hand to give a summary of their connection to Saint John’s. In addition, nominations from the floor will be accepted.
Our Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper is on February 28 from 5:30 p.m. – 7 p.m., $5 requested donation per person, or $12 for families. Come and celebrate the last day before Ash Wednesday and Lent, a season that includes fasting or choosing a new spiritual practice. We celebrate this Mardi Gras with pancakes, syrup, bacon, fruit, etc., an awesome tradition!
Ash Wednesday is Wednesday, March 1. The Right Reverend Allen Shin, Bishop Suffragan of the Diocese of New York, will be our Celebrant and Preacher at the 12:05 p.m. Service. He was last with us for our Visitation on Sunday, October 16, 2016 when we had Adult Confirmations, Receptions and Reaffirmations. I will be the Celebrant and Preacher at 7 p.m. Both services are at the High Altar and will include the Imposition of Ashes and the Holy Eucharist. Feel free to invite your friends!
I will be leading a Lenten Study on four Thursday Evenings during Lent using the book by prominent preacher and theologian William H. Willimon, Sinning Like a Christian: A New Look at the Seven Deadly Sins. Classes will be held on Thursdays, March 9, 16, 30, and April 6 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. Please let me know if you are interested so that I can order you a book.
May the light of Christ be manifest in you that your lives may be a light to the world!
Epiphany blessings and love,
The Rev. Dr. Victoria R. Sirota
