Collect for Sunday, 19 March 2017
The Third Sunday in Lent

Almighty God, you know that we have no power in ourselves to help ourselves: Keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

“Almighty God, you know that we have no power in ourselves to help ourselves.” If we could just remember this, we would spare ourselves much anguish! Lent is a wonderful time to remember our profound need for God. Only God can protect us from evil and lead us in the right direction.

Our Annual Report is a wonderful summary of what we as the Congregation of Saint John’s Getty Square have accomplished in 2016. If you missed the Annual Meeting but would still like a copy of our 2016 Annual Report, please contact Jan Valentine at the Church Office parish@yonkerschurch.org).

Catherine Mitchell Odishoo, otherwise known as Kay, was a longtime member of Saint John’s Getty Square. She and her husband George were married here on November 15, 1952. All four of their children (Ellen, John, David and George) were baptized and confirmed here. Kay was an active member of the choir and the Altar Society. Kay died on February 18th at the age of 85. Her Memorial Service will be held this Saturday afternoon, March 18th, at the F. Ruggiero and Sons Funeral Home, 732 Yonkers Ave. People may greet the family at 2 p.m. I will be the Officiant for the Memorial Service which will take place at 2:30 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Your prayers are requested.

Our Lenten Study on Thursday Evenings using the book by preacher and theologian William H. Willimon, Sinning Like a Christian: A New Look at the Seven Deadly Sins continues this Thursday, March 16 from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Church Office. Please don’t forget to bring your books. We will be discussing pride, envy and anger! Our next meeting is two weeks from now, on March 30th.

And please sign up for The Saint John’s Festival Choir which will be processing and singing on Easter Sunday at the 10:15 a.m. Festival Service. Rehearsals will begin on Wednesday, March 22 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. in the Rectory, and will continue Wednesday evenings March 29, April 5 and April 12. Please email Bob Sirota directly (bobsirota@me.com) if you are interested.

I will be on Retreat next week at Saint Margaret’s Convent in Duxbury Massachusetts. This is important time for me to reconnect with my spiritual director and confessor, and to listen more carefully to God in prayer. Therefore, next Wednesday, March 22 at 12:05 p.m. we will not be having Mass, but there will be a Noonday Service with Jan Valentine as Officiant for those who are interested. No Bible Study on Wednesday, March 22.

For the next three Sundays in Lent, we begin with the Penitential Order including a reciting of the Decalogue, Confession and Absolution. Our pride is forever telling us that we are gods, that we have no need of Christ. When we listen to that voice we get into deep trouble. “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

Lenten blessings and love,

The Rev. Canon Victoria R. Sirota
