From Mother Vicki

From Mother Vicki

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Our historic bell is back!!!  What a beautiful day Tuesday was as our bell was returned to its tower!  The sun was shining, and the Verdin Bell company, along with a crane company and various other hard-hat workers, lifted our restored bell (dated 1808) into our bell tower. Two former Senior Wardens, Carol Craft and George Morrison, as well as our new Senior Warden Debbie DeBride were all on hand to watch the installation. We have rediscovered our voice in Yonkers!  This is a new and glorious day for Getty Square.  Many thanks to Angie Piwinski, who wrote a wonderful article about the bell’s history, we received coverage from Channel 12, and hopefully will have some photos and possibly an article in Friday’s Yonkers Rising.

By the way, the bell needed to be restored because of corrosion over the centuries, and journeyed from here to Ohio, to Holland (in Europe!), to Ohio and back here.  They did a beautiful job.  Because the bell is so shiny, you can see it clearly when the sun shines on it, a glorious sight!

Please consider joining our lay led Bible Study on Sundays between the services (9:20 – 10:05 a.m.) in the Library.  This is a smart and enthusiastic group!  Feel free to drop in any Sunday.  For more information, please contact Jen Longley (jenlongley@att.net)  or Tara Seeley (taramseeley@gmail.com).

We are beginning a new course entitled “Via Media”, or “The Middle Way” on Monday, May 7 at 7 p.m. in Library.  If you have questions about your faith, the Bible, doctrine, and the Episcopal Church this is perfect for you!  Each session includes a 25 minutes video, handouts, small group discussion and a short presentation includes videos and hand-outs that are helpful to understanding more about faith and the Episcopal Church, as well as small group discussions.  The eight classes will be offered on eight Monday nights beginning on Monday night, May 7th at 7 p.m. (see below for specific dates).  Please let me know if you are interested or if you know someone who might be interested (mothervsirota@gmail.com; 914-969-2969).

Our next big Festival Eucharist is Pentecost Sunday, May 20th.   Both choirs will be singing, along with our wonderful tenor soloist (who last sang with us on Easter Sunday) Jason Slayden.  I am happy to meet with adults who might be interested in the Sacrament of Baptism, seekers who might wish to find out more about Baptism, or parents who want their child to be baptized on that Sunday.  Both the Saint John’s Children’s Choir (from 4:30 – 5:15 p.m.) and the Saint John’s Festival Choir (5:45 – 6:30 p.m.) will be rehearsing Wednesdays from April 25th through Wednesday, May 16th in preparation for Pentecost Sunday.  It is not too late to join us!  Contact me at mothervsirota@gmail.com if you are interested in Baptism or joining our choir.

As we reclaim our voice in Getty Square, we ask your continued prayers for this Congregation, for the Sharing Community, for the City of Yonkers, for Westchester County and New York State social services, and for the homeless, tourists, and residents of Yonkers.   May God bless us all with new resolve, new energy, and new ideas for this wondrous city.

Easter blessings and love,

The Reverend Canon Victoria Sirota
