The Collect for Sunday, September 9, 2018
Grant us, O Lord, to trust in you with all our hearts; for, as you always resist the proud who confide in their own strength, so you never forsake those who make their boast of your mercy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
“Grant us, O Lord, to trust in you with all our hearts….” It sounds easy, but that is probably the hardest thing to do. When our lives get complicated, especially the particular way they do in September as school restarts and schedules heat up again, that’s exactly when we need to ask for help. In the Gospel for this Sunday, Jesus heals the daughter of a Gentile woman despite what appears to be a real put-down of her and the fact that she is not Jewish. The woman is insistent, however, because she knows that Jesus is the answer to her prayers. It is her faith in his mercy that breaks through the cultural barriers, and Jesus responds to that faith by healing her daughter from afar.
Our 325th Anniversary celebration is in two weeks. How glorious it will be! If you have not signed up yet for the Gala Luncheon at 1 p.m. that day, please do so. We have a number of slots that have already been funded by donors. We simply need to know who would like to attend. Please give me a call (969 2969) or email me (firstname.lastname@example.org) by September 10th if you wish to be put on that list. We are touched by the ads, donations and responses from people near and far, as well as everyone here who has already donated abundantly of their time, resources and energy. THANK YOU! This will be such a joyous event. Don’t miss out! Car-pooling from the church will be available. Also, please note that our 325th Anniversary Committee will be meeting in the Church Office at noon this Sunday, September 9th. Please join us if you can help out.
This Sunday our Service will return to the Church and both Coffee Hours will be in the Library. The Penny Social returns at 12:30 p.m. in the Guild Room. Thanks to all who give so generously of their time and assets to make this great fundraiser happen! And don’t forget our terrific Farmers’ and Flea Market on Thursdays. It is truly awesome!
Our last Via Media Class is on Monday, September 10 at 7 p.m. in the Library. In this class, we will discuss the meaning of Holy Eucharist and will actually share Holy Communion together. The class will likely go a little longer than usual. I look forward to the blessing of this time and our conversation together.
It’s not too late to join the Saint John’s Festival Choir for our 325th Anniversary Service with Bishop Mary Glasspool. We will be meeting on the next two Wednesdays, Sept. 12 and 19 from 5:30 – 6 :30 p.m. in the Church. Please let Bob Sirota, our intrepid Choir Director and Court Composer, know if you can join us (email@example.com)!
May we, too, have the courage and faith to boast in God’s wondrous mercy. See you Sunday!
In Christ and with love,
The Rev. Dr. Victoria R. Sirota
