From Mother Vicki

“I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples,
and I will sing praises to you among the nations.
For your steadfast love is higher than the heavens,
and your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.”
                                                                                  Psalm 108:3-4

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Sunday, December 1, the First Sunday in Advent is our Stewardship Sunday.  This is the time when we ask all of us, the members of Saint John’s Getty Square, to make a financial and a personal pledge for 2020 that will not only help us prepare a budget for the new year, but will also help us look ahead to volunteers for all of the good work that is being done here.

Why give to Saint John’s?

Tara Seeley, our Senior Warden, writes the following: "I am inspired to give when I see how deeply parishioners treasure this faith community, and give of themselves so unselfishly as volunteers and leaders."

Chris Canty, our Junior Warden, writes: “In a nutshell…for the joy of giving.  Giving comes in many forms for me at St. John’s.  The weekly envelope that is put on the plate.  This reminds me that I have a pledge to fulfill to help this wonderful church continue to survive and to fulfill its mission in Getty Square.  Using the envelopes also helps St. John’s with the recording of the donations. This, however, is only a small part of “giving” to St. John’s.   Giving takes many forms.  Volunteering as a reader and a greeter means so much.  You help to deliver the word of God and you have the opportunity to connect with your fellow parishioners.  Contributing food to the Sunday Coffee Hour provides that wonderful joy of sharing with others.  Giving of a lifetime of experience allows me to hopefully make a meaningful contribution to the guidance and support that the vestry gives in the running of St. John’s.  And then there is the festival choir, a true joy to be part of as we lift our voices to the glory of God.”

Jen Longley, Clerk of the Vestry, writes, “I give to St. John’s because it is my spiritual home.  I am thankful for all of the blessings that the Lord has bestowed on me, and I am ‘paying it forward.’  When I support St. John’s by volunteering and pledging, it enables others to find the sustenance and nurturance here, like I do.”

As we step out in faith again this year, we ask you to consider making a financial pledge of what you think you might give--especially if you have not done so before. Our pledges express hope in our future together as the body of Christ.  If you have pledged in the past, we ask you to consider increasing your financial pledge by 10% or whatever amount you are able to increase it by for 2020.  And if you have not volunteered in the past, we ask you to consider offering your services as a volunteer in one of the many ways that will make Saint John’s an even more wonderful and loving place.

We have enclosed a pledge card where you may indicate what new or continuing ministry you would like to be part of and what your monetary pledge for 2020 will be.  Let us know if you would like envelopes.  Please place your pledge card in the offering plate so that we may pray over them.  Our official Stewardship Sunday is December 1st, the First Sunday of Advent.

I thank God for all of you, and for these last three and a half years as your Priest-in-Charge, and now as your Rector.  There are so many miraculous and exciting things happening in this place.  May God bless us all powerfully in our continuing life together in Getty Square!

In Christ and with love and gratitude,

Vicki+
The Reverend Canon Victoria Sirota, Rector
