Our prisons are disproportionately filled with black and Latino prisoners for minor non-violent drug offenses while studies consistently show whites commit these offenses at roughly the same proportion yet do not enter the criminal justice system. Alexander makes her case using detailed analysis and a vast body of research to show that this has become a situation as damaging to the black population as Jim Crow was of former days. You do not need to read the book to attend. Please come and learn about both the justice and spiritual issues this book raises.

Our St. John's Restoration Campaign began in April 2013. After much fund-raising, being awarded several grants, developing plans for the restoration of the front façade of the church we now wish to announce to the public some good news. Please join us for an after-work celebration on Thursday, September 17, 2015 at the Yonkers Brewing Company.

It is appropriate to hold the event at the local brewery because one of the windows being restored memorializes Edward Underhill whose family built the first Yonkers Brewery once located on Chicken Island.

The parish meets once each year to elect officers, to thank people for their ministries, to examine our finances, and most importantly to think and pray about our mission here in Yonkers.

All those who have been regular attendees at worship in 2014, who contributed to the parish financially in 2014, who are over the age of 18 are voting members of the parish. Those who do not meet these criteria may still come to support and learn about the parish.

Picnic For the Sharing Community

Jesus said when you throw a party invite those who cannot return the favor and you will receive blessing from God. This year St. John's scheduled two Parish Picnics. The first one we had was the parish picnic held in July for those who worship and participate regularly in the life of St. John's. The Second one is this next Sunday, August 24, and we are joining the Sharing Community to have a picnic on the grounds with the people who go there for lunch each day. We welcome volunteers to help us with tables and to serve food. We will begin setting up after the service at 11AM and will be breaking down the tables at about 1:30 PM. Grace Abounds at our One Day Bible School

We joined earth to heaven, and heaven to earth as we learned the story of Jacob and the ladder of his dream during our One Day Bible School this last Tuesday, July 15 at St. John's Church. Nine students, three assistants, and three teachers, sang, prayed, learned stories, made art, visited the Malotz Skilled Nursing Pavillion, went to a park, and last but not least, learned to sing "Jesus loves the little children" in American Sign Language. St. John's Serves the Community!

Yesterday was our first week to help serve the meal at the Sharing Community. Well, not actually. Back in the day it was members of the congregation who started serving meals as part of a ministry that eventually formed into the Sharing Community, but it is really nice that we have reformed that connection. Diane Irving has been great to get it organized and we had an enthusiastic first go.

This is a great thing for St. John's. It is a way for us to actively put into practice what we learn in the liturgy God calls us to do!

Faith Friends

Do you remember the song we used to sing called "They will know we are Christians by our Love". Because we want to make this true at St. John's a team of people have organized a new ministry called Faith Friends. Here is an excerpt from the Informational Flyer.

"What is Faith Friends? Faith Friends is a way for us to express our care for one another and to remember to pray for one another. In the recent past a weekly rhythm of life was the norm, and people showed their care for each other when they gathered at church. Today life follows different rhythms. It is harder to depend on the weekly gathering in order to stay in touch. Faith Friends enables us to care for one another even when we do not see each other every week. We commit to pray and make regular contact with one another whether at church, by telephone, or some other way. This allows us to both receive and give spiritual care during the week as well."

Sunday, February 16, 2014: The roads around the church are not good but passable though be very careful of potholes. The church parking lot has residual snow and ice, can be slippery, but is passable for steady walkers with appropriate footwear taking proper precautions. There are less spaces than usual due to snow accumulation, but if people will remember they can also park along the Hudson Street fence in front of the Sharing Community there should be sufficient space. Please choose to be safe, and if this means you need to stay home by all means do so. Remember to pray for yourself, this parish, and the world, this and every day. Father John.

Celebration and Looking Forward: Parish Meeting 2014

We have a rich life together at St. John's as we seek to live out our faith in Getty Square. Each year wecelebrate our year and look to our future with the Annual Parish Meeting. This year the meeting is on Sunday, February 23. We hope everyone will attend.

We will be electing 4 Vestrypersons and 1 Warden at that meeting, and all people who attend worship regularly and contribute during the preceding year are may vote. You can go here to find a suggestion form for the nominating committee, and also to see information about who is eligible to stand. The nominating committee is planning to meet tomorrow, Sunday, February 16, weather permitting, at 11:30 PM and will be accepting forms until that time. (This time was extended) You can also make nominations from the floor at the meeting.

Candlemas: Blessing of Candles

Let the light of Christ shine in your life! Bring a candle to church this Sunday to be blessed. Ideally it could be a candle easily lit and extinguished many times, like one in a jar, so that you can light it when you or your family says prayers together. We will hear this week how Simeon recognized in Christ the light for the nations. He did this because of his rich life of prayer. Candlemas can be an occasion for us to rededicate our lives to the presence of Christ in our lives. Come to Church, this February 2, 2014. We will all be richer for it. Advent Begins December 1

There are many opportunities for Spiritual enrichment during Advent here at St. John's. Last week our Sunday School Families made Advent Wreathes to take home. With each wreathe a booklet went home with a meditation for each day of Advent. There are also available posters that have a special Advent Calendar of activities one can do to observe the countdown to Christ's Birth! If you would like to help needy families in Advent there are two ways you can do so. We have a toy and gift drive going on to which you can contribute either gifts or money. The items are intended for children newborn to sixteen years of age. This project is being done in conjunction with the Greyston Foundation, here in Yonkers. You may also pick up a gifts for life catalog. Do you not know what to get that someone who does not need anything? How about give a needy family in another country fresh water, or seeds to plant, or mosquito nets, or some other item to make their life better, and then let your loved one know it was done in their honor for Christmas? A wonderful idea!

Stewardship Awareness Month

November is Stewardship Awareness Month at St. John's. We are not calling it a Stewardship Campaign because our own Helen Hutchinson opines that Stewardship is about every moment of our life. Everything we have comes from God and thus every decision we make about our time, our actions, our money, is a decision about something God has given us. We have gathered some resources together on a stewardship page. You will find there a FAQ (frequently asked questions), a letter from Father John, and 3 You-Tube videos all on the subject of stewardship. Class on Christian Spirituality

God is constant, all other things change, even our understandings. In today's world faith is confused

with certainty, spirituality with magical thinking, and love with feelings. Thus the way the faith is presented is always shaped by the preconceptions of our culture. This class will help make new connections in response to our society, and will also derive its center from the sense of mission God gives each of us in Baptism. "Salt of the Earth" will cover the core subjects of Christian faith with respect to our current society and this missional impulse in Christianity, and is intended especially for people who are new to the parish in the last two years. A bishop will be visiting us early in the next year and anyone who would like to be confirmed, received, or renew their baptismal vows should attend this class. 70 Creatures (40 Human) Celebrated St Francis Saturday Oct. 5.

St. John's Church - Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013 -- We joined Wilbur the turtle, Pearl the dove, Boaz the Dog, Sylvester the rescued kitten, and many other animals including a good assortment of human beings to Bless Animals and those who care for them. There were quite a number of visitors who attended for the first time this year. Next year we are hoping to have a set up crew to practice the hymn because many people did not know the tune to "All Things Bright and Beautiful". It is with great relief that the event went very well, the non-human animals enjoying their treats very much, and no-one getting bit or eaten. Also thanks to Julia who brought St. Francis Medals for the animals. O ye cattle and herds, and beasts of the field, bless ye the Lord!"
